Port Praski is the first large industrial port in Warsaw, in the heart of the city, in the district of Praga-Północ
. It was built at the beginning of the 19th century on a backwater of Vistula.
Port Praski was the city's most important river port for about 50 years, but nowadays its various functions
(slaughterhouse, Chinese restaurant, mini amusement park, playground, warehouses) have settled, and its
original function has changed completely. The harbor is still one of Prague's most valuable but underused
areas of Warsaw.
Agenda
In my outdoor design, I focused on three main part on the harbor: the port reception area, the bay and
the dock. The basic concept of the design was to create the free spaces - in addition to their maximum u
tilization - to best match the functions planned for these areas (playground, walkway, reception areas, rest
areas, community space, harbor), but do not rival the near big parks, or the Vistula Coast and the
recreation offered by nearby nature.
My aim was to create space spaces between these units that give a pleasant sense of space, become a
community space, serve as a meeting point and a point of departure.
The planned condition
From the point of view I treated in one unit the reception area and the bay. This one unit would be
divided by the building blocks two functional part. On each side I took into consideration the possible
main traffic lines, thus creating a mesh structure with triangle or rectangular shapes. In these forms I have
designated grass surfaces. This grass surfaces would be angled with sitting function and diverting traffic.
In both areas the cover is locally cast monolithic concrete with surface colouring between the monolithic
concrete 2-3 cm wide dilatation strips running.
The gray of the envelope would be break with tree lines, LED steaks and corten steel stripes. I designed
the dock tongue in the same way, but the planned vegetation remind to the natural vegetation on the
river bank from the opposite side. I plan to break the envelope with perennial beds, where the water
imitator and ornamental grasses will be placed.
The design areas are harmoniously adapted to the chosen construction concept and the large green
areas, thus obtained are in balance with the formed surface. The planned large-scale tree mass
connected to near-natural parts. Instead of the deteriorated and abandoned industrial port modified
with the new design and changing function created a new space. This area could be connect to the
existing green space system and could have a remarkable recreational opportunity in Warsaw's life.
